Children and families in Auckland to benefit from Rotary donation

Hundreds of Auckland children and their families are set to benefit from the fundraising efforts of the Rotary Club of Newmarket which recently donated $15,000 to Family Works Northern, the child and family services division of Presbyterian Support Northern.

Presbyterian Support Northern CEO Dr Rod Watts says the Rotary club’s generous donation will be used to support the provision of counselling and social work services to vulnerable children and families in Auckland.

“Unfortunately there is a huge amount of need in the community and only a limited amount of Government funding. So, support from the community for our work is hugely appreciated,” he says.

“The $15,000 donated by the Rotary Club of Newmarket will help fund some counsellors and/or social workers in Auckland to assist children and families to overcome the issues they face and reach their full potential.”

Rotary Club of Newmarket President Ron Seeto says the club is pleased to be able to support Family Works Northern.

“Each year we raise and distribute funds to a range of worthwhile causes, primarily community and youth projects, and we felt that Family Works Northern’s work alongside children and families definitely warranted our support.”

The Rotary Club of Newmarket distributes between $200,000 and $300,000 each year. They raise this money through various channels including charity dinners, an annual Melbourne Cup lunch at Ellerslie Racecourse and the Circus Quirkus event.

Family Works Northern works throughout Auckland and the Upper North Island with children aged up to 17 and their families, supporting them to make positive and lasting differences in their lives. They offer counselling and social work support, a range of educational group programmes for children and parents/caregivers and are involved in various community development initiatives.

Areas of focus include helping clients to: overcome the effects of abuse, deal with grief/loss, increase confidence/self-esteem, improve communication and reduce problematic behaviour.
