Understanding Grief and Loss Workshop
Understanding Grief and Loss is a workshop that helps identify the needs of those who are grieving and how to best support them.
The workshop explores the processes that people may go through when they are bereaved or discover they have a terminal illness. It can be very difficult to comfort a grieving person, we can feel uneasy in this kind of situation, unsure of how to react or simply get lost for words. You’ll be introduced to a holistic ‘PIES’ model to understand how grief affects us in different areas – Physically, Emotionally, Intellectually and Spiritually.
The workshop takes us through the grieving process and presents ideas on how to manage emotions and give support.
Seminar Topics
• Defining grief and loss – reaching a shared understanding
• Reflecting on our own experience – what experiences you’ve had, what has it taught you, how might this assist and influence you in your work
• Exploring the influence of values and beliefs – personal, family/whanau, spiritual, community, social and cultural
• Identifying the needs of the grieving people/person – how do you know what they need, who else is assisting/supporting, and what they might want from you
• Self-care - how do we achieve a balance between caring for ourselves and caring for others
