About Us

Presbyterian Support Northern (PSN) is one of seven autonomous not-for-profit organisations in Aotearoa that come under the Presbyterian Support banner. Collectively we are one of the largest non-government social service providers in New Zealand - seeking to enrich the quality of life in the communities we serve by meeting social needs that are not otherwise adequately being met.

PSN, the largest of these regions both geographically and in terms of population, has approximately 450 staff based in 20 offices and numerous schools from Whangarei to Turangi. We provide a wide range of innovative, quality services to vulnerable people in the community (regardless of race, beliefs or background.)

Our vision is "A Better Life for Everyone".

Our mission is to make positive and lasting differences across generations by:

  • Walking alongside vulnerable people so they achieve their goals
  • Providing leading edge services
  • Investing in and supporting skilled and dedicated staff
  • Proactively contributing to the achievement of safe and flourishing communities and a just society.

Our vision and mission are underpinned by set of values.

Operationally our focus is on children and their families, older people and disabled people:

Our services are available regardless of race, beliefs or background. You don't have to be Presbyterian to be supported by, work for, or support Presbyterian Support Northern.

We receive Government funding for many of our services and programmes, but this does not cover all of our costs, nor the expenses associated with the provision of support to meet community needs the Government does not fund. Therefore we rely heavily on the wider community for financial and other forms of support.

  • Our History - An incorporated society registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, PSN has a proud history. Founded in 1884 by Duncan Macpherson, the first Auckland City Missioner we share a common heritage with the Presbyterian Church and many of our financial supporters and volunteers are Presbyterians, however we are independent from the church.
  • The Board – The Board includes representatives of each of the presbyteries (or their equivalent) in our region and of Te Aka Puaho (the Maori Synod), plus three independent trustees - has overall responsibility for, and is charged with, the governance of the organisation including setting PSN's strategic direction.
  • Leadership Team and Managers - The Chief Executive, who is employed by the Board, is responsible for managing the organisation including ensuring key objectives are achieved. He is supported by the PSN Leadership Team and other managers.
