Sale Provides Resources for new Services for older People

“Presbyterian Support East Coast $17 million sale of its Hawkes Bay rest homes will fuel a range of new services for older people” said Shaun Robinson CEO

Announcing the successful completion of the sale Mr Robinson stated that the $17 million will be invested and the income used for new services across the region.

“As the number of older people grows, the needs of the 95% who live in the community are expanding. New types of services are required to ensure a positive aging experience for individuals and for the Hawkes Bay community” said Lorna Cowan Presbyterian Support’s General Manager of Services for Older People.

“We already have new community services underway that will be equivalent in size to three rest homes” Ms Cowan said. “Community FIRST offers a restorative, individual focused choice to older people who would normally be in rest homes but choose to stay in their home. Our Evergreen Circle restorative day programme is expanding by four fold.” said Lorna Cowan.

“We will be able to make more announcements on new initiatives soon, which is very exciting.”

NZ residential care provider Qualcare is the purchaser of the rest homes, having previously bought Presbyterian Support facilities in the upper South Island and Auckland regions.

The sale includes Atawhai in Taradale, Eversely in Hastings, Duart in Havelock North, Woburn in Waipukurau and Rahiri in Dannevirke.

“The sale has been very successful because over 96% of staff have chosen to stay on under Qualcare’s management, which means that the relationships with the residents will remain in tact.” said Mr Robinson. “Qualcare are a quality provider with an excellent track record”

Presbyterian Support have been pioneers in residential care, helping to set standards and break new ground.

“We are proud to have been the steward of these excellent community resources” said Shaun Robinson. “Presbyterian Support hand on that heritage to Qualcare confident that they will be good stewards and support the facilities to continue their care for older people”.

“While the change has been difficult and sad for Presbyterian Support it is now looking to the future and the new ways it can support older people” said Mr Robinson.

“Presbyterian Support has been talking to older people about what they need and we are developing new initiatives that respond to what they are telling us”.

“Presbyterian Support’s commitment to older people has never been stronger” said Shaun Robinson.

“With the resources freed by this sale the community gets a double benefit, the rest homes keep going under Qualcare and Presbyterian Support can provide extra services that fill gaps in what older people need.”
