Press Release March 6th 2006

Presbyterian Support East Coast part of the Launch of a new national service – Family Works

Child & Family Hastings is being rebranded Family Works, as part of the regional and national rebranding being undertaken throughout the country by Presbyterian Support.

“This will be the only sector where Presbyterian Support’s regionally based organisations will collectively deliver a national service“ says PSEC Fundraising, Communications and Marketing Manager Graeme Milne. “This takes on real significance not only for this service as we consolidate our profile in the family services sector but also as our profile evolves to include more emphasis on community development services.”

“The traditional image of Presbyterian Support is as providers of residential based services for older people. However this no longer is the case as some regions have pulled out of the residential services in favour of community based services. Through Family Works Presbyterian Support plans to become a prominent national provider of services for families and children” says Graeme. “Indeed our overall image will be affected by the developments in this sector “.

“National initiatives will develop in tandem with our continued focus on the needs of local communities,” says Kate Luff, manager of Family Works in Hastings. “At Family Works, we are aware of the issues that are facing today’s families.  We see the headlines, we hear the news.  We know what happens when the family unit isn’t functioning well. We want to see boys becoming good men, and young women growing up with great self esteem.  We want families to thrive and flourish, so that everyone in the family can reach their full potential”.

In response to this, Family Works offers a service that works alongside families, to help them get back to where they want to be.  We do this by working with each family’s own strengths and resources and then setting family goals.

“Uniquely to Family Works Hastings, we have two teams of social workers working in partnership – one providing generic social work services and one providing tikanga Maori based social work.  This means that when a family comes to us for support, they can choose whichever approach feels more comfortable for them” says Kate. Another community initiative is the HIPPY programme in Flaxmere, which offers a unique way for pre-school age children and their families to learn and grow together.

The new Family Works logo embodies the Harakeke symbol because it represents a fundamental source of survival and well being for whanau, genealogy, diverse use, strength, medicinal qualities, along with concepts of weaving and binding.  The Harakeke has seven fronds, symbolic of the seven Family Works regions in NZ .

In celebration of the adoption of the Family Works name, a ceremonial planting of a Harakeke takes place at the Lyndon Rd site on Wednesday the 8th  at 3pm. All media are invited to attend.
