Enliven Positive Ageing Services is the name of the new Presbyterian Support East Coast (PSEC) service for older people in our community.  PSEC are committed to applying the income from the proceeds of the sale of Woburn in Central Hawke’s Bay and Rahiri in Dannevirke to the development of services or initiatives which support positive aging in these communities.  Enliven has an office with Heartland Services in Ruataniwha Street Waipukurau.  Jo Nash the full time Community Worker for Enliven, has lived in Central Hawke’s Bay for just under a year now and is enjoying the role and the opportunity to make connections with people in the communities of Southern Hawke’s Bay.

“We are enthusiastic to work collaboratively with Maureen Smith from CHB Age Concern,” says Lorna Cowan PSEC Manager Enliven Positive Ageing Services. “It is important to acknowledge the excellent work being done by  organizations already providing some excellent services in the area. Working together creates valuable networks and improves opportunities and outcomes for all our clients.  We plan to jointly set up a base in Waipawa at the Senior Citizens hall in Waverley Street, designed to offer a focal point for older people in Waipawa and surrounding areas Enliven Positive Aging Services will develop a Day programme which will run one day per week and provide people with an opportunity to come together socially and participate in a range of activities.  We would like to encourage people in outlying areas such as Otane, Tikokino and Ongaonga where there is currently little available to join us.  We recognize that lack of transport is a barrier for some people and would like to hear from you if this is the case, we will do our best to assist with this.  The programme will be funded by Presbyterian Support with a small charge of $4 per session. Both Maureen and Jo will be available on Wednesdays from the 4th April

Jo advises that “95% of older people remain all their lives in the community in their own homes; however there are many gaps in services to effectively support them.” She adds “Enliven is based on positive aging principles; we are committed to supporting people to have choice and achieve their aims. Enliven services are based upon restoring the physical, mental & social wellbeing of our older people and their families. We do this by listening to what older people want, providing rehabilitation and opportunities for friendship and socialization to occur.  Enliven services have made a dramatic improvement to the lives of many older people and their families, enabling them to remain in their own homes safely and without isolation.  In many instances these people would have little choice but to move into rest home or hospital care.  We have 8 services in operation throughout our regions with approximately 140 clients currently and growing fast.  We work closely with other community groups such as Age Concern, local Councils and health providers to promote a positive attitude to aging in the East Coast and encourage local communities to embrace the challenges of the aging population.”
