Chalmers redevelopment confirmed
Date: May 29, 2009
The long-awaited redevelopment of New Plymouth’s Chalmers Home is set to begin in March after confirmation from the Board of Presbyterian Support Central.
The home, which provides Enliven Positive Ageing Services to North Taranaki, will be upgraded in a two-phase project that will provide four new 12-room cottages, each with its own lounge and dining space.
Chief Executive Chris Graham says as part of the project, some of Chalmers’ existing rooms will be enhanced while dining, kitchen, office and lounge areas will be redeveloped.
“The redevelopment will mean this much-loved and appreciated home will continue to offer the highest level of service to the people of Taranaki for many years to come,” Mr Graham says.
“We are delighted that, in partnership with New Plymouth’s BGB Architects, we’ve been able to come up with a great design which is also affordable in the present financial climate.”
Phase One, which involves demolishing parts of the home’s Central and East blocks and building two of the cottages, is set to take place between March and October next year at an estimated cost of $6.2 million.
Presbyterian Support Central will be inviting the New Plymouth and wider Taranaki communities to work with us to resource the project.
